About

Dear Diving and Boating Enthusiasts,

Thank you for visiting this website dedicated to discussing pertinent issues in diving and boating. My name is Jan-Philipp “JP” Lauer and as the mind behind this website, I am inter alia driven by a passion for promoting safety in dive liveaboards – a concern that has been underscored by a number of activities in this area.

My involvement in diving safety took a significant turn when I collaborated with Taucher.Net following the 2023 Carlton Queen capsizing accident. This collaboration led to the development of Justus’ bachelor thesis on dive liveaboard safety, a project that I co-supervised. Drawing from my extensive background in aviation, where I specialize as an incident investigator with a master’s degree in air transport management, I bring a unique perspective of accident prevention. This project resulted in the creation of the Maritime Survey International (MSI) Liveaboard Audit Program. It provides liveaboard operators with relevant, practical advice to improve their operational safety.

My maritime qualifications include the German equivalent of the Yachtmaster Ocean, Long Range Certificate, World Sailing Offshore Personal Survival, and Medicine at Sea. My commitment to enhancing diving liveaboard safety was intensified by a personal experience sailing on the Eye of the Wind during a grounding incident in August 2016. Witnessing the comprehensive rescue operation conducted by the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service left an indelible mark on me.

As a diving instructor with TDI/SDI, I am pleased to offer a range of courses – from open water to divemaster – along with specialized training in Sidemount, Nitrox, Deep, Dry Suit among others. Additionally, I am an IANTD Technical Diver and hold various other specialty certifications.

I am partial to sidemount diving and am always happy to work on that. A great source of information on sidemount diving is sidemounting.com.

If you are interested in advancing your diving skills and knowledge, I invite you to get in touch.
